Don't ever pour water on Birthday Celebrants: Ajayi Crowther University warns

The days when people presented celebrants with birthday cards, assorted gifts, plenty sincere wishes and accolades (well, that too) are long gone. Mostly in Nigerian Universities, birthdays are celebrated with buckets of water, bowls of garri, elubo and even condiments. Well wishers bring out the celebrant against his/her wishes and pour water mixed the above mentioned ingredients.

It is usually fun, harmless and entertaining but many take it to the extreme. They might ask the celebrant to lie in a pool of dirty water, some are even beaten all in the name of celebrating birthday. I was privy to one which was almost inhumane left to me, the boy was first beaten, drenched in water. I heard in the process blood oozed out from his ears as a result of the beating. It's right to celebrate someone's birth, it's also good to celebrate it properly and not in a rather barbaric fashion.

Hence, Ajayi Crowther University has warned her students to stop the unfunny act of pouring water on celebrants. It further said defaulters of the memo passed would face the Student Disciplinary Committee of the University.

It was an information written boldly on a card board in the female lodge of the University

I for one feel it's necessary. I do not agree with such unfunny acts. Birthday should be celebrated with serenity of heart, gentle quietness and cheers. That's all.

What do you think?
